Doula
Supporting the birthing mom at home, in the hospital or birthing center, during cesarean, or a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
Depending on where you look, the definition of Doula is "woman who serves" or "female slave" from the Greek. She supports a mother before, during, and after birth and the Doula supports the mother's support system. A Doula traditionally has no medical training. She is there to nurture the family. The common role for the Doula is that of emotional and physical support for the mother. There are pain coping techniques, resources, massage, and focal imagery that the Doula can bring to your awareness or remind you of at a critical moment.
She is there for the best outcome for the whole family. She supports the Significant Other allowing them to give thier full attention to the mother. The Doula provides emotional support for all parties. This can take the form of helping the Significant Other to understand what mom needs or is concerned about. The Doula can bring physical support in the form of food, ice, calling the nurse, while the Significant Other is able to stay with mom or provide the opposite and be there when someone needs to step out for a break or to use the restroom.

In our first meeting, we will discuss your perception of a Doula and the role that you would like for me to enter into for you.
